Bursitis can cause persistent pain, stiffness, and limited movement that interferes with everyday activities like walking, reaching, exercising, or even sleeping comfortably. At Westfield Health & Rehabilitation, Dr. Todd Carnucci provides personalized care for bursitis in Westfield, NJ, helping patients reduce inflammation, improve mobility, and return to daily activities with less discomfort.
Serving patients in Westfield, Cranford, Scotch Plains, Summit, and surrounding Union County communities, our team focuses on identifying the cause of your pain and creating a treatment plan designed for long-term relief—not just temporary symptom management.
Bursitis occurs when a bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions joints and reduces friction between bones, muscles, and tendons, becomes irritated or inflamed. This can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the affected area.
Bursitis most commonly affects:
It often develops from repetitive motion, overuse, prolonged pressure, or injury, especially in active individuals or those with physically demanding jobs.
Bursitis symptoms can vary depending on the affected joint, but often include:
If left untreated, bursitis can lead to compensation patterns that affect nearby joints and muscles.
At Westfield Health & Rehabilitation, treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation to understand how your body is moving and what may be contributing to joint stress.
While bursitis affects soft tissue, joint mechanics often play a major role. Restrictions in movement, poor posture, and altered biomechanics can increase pressure on the bursa and surrounding structures.
Chiropractic care may help:
Shockwave therapy is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments offered at Westfield Health & Rehabilitation for bursitis.
The clinic describes shockwave therapy as a treatment that uses acoustic waves to target injured soft tissue, reduce inflammation, and stimulate healing.
This therapy is commonly used for conditions including bursitis, plantar fasciitis, tendon injuries, and joint pain.
Shockwave therapy is especially beneficial for patients with chronic or stubborn bursitis that has not responded to rest or traditional treatments.
Research also shows that extracorporeal shockwave therapy is used to support healing and improve function in soft tissue injuries and inflammatory conditions.
Because bursitis can be influenced by multiple factors, your care plan may include a combination of therapies such as:
Westfield Health & Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary facility, allowing patients to receive coordinated care in one location for more efficient recovery.
Bursitis often begins as mild discomfort but can become more limiting over time. Without proper treatment, it may lead to chronic inflammation, reduced mobility, and compensation in other parts of the body.
If you are experiencing joint pain, swelling, or difficulty moving comfortably, early care may help prevent the condition from worsening.

Dr. Carnucci is the best. Highly recommend!*

This is a one stop wellness center. Dr Todd is outstanding. They now offer acupuncture ( I was a skeptic…no longer). Their physical therapist is excellent. As needed you can get an appointment with several pain management specialists. The office staff is friendly and will try their best to make appointments to fit the lives of the busy man or woman. They have the spinal decompression which will offer tremendous relieve to lower back pain, bulging discs, herniated disc, and sciatica…and I am a walking testament to that. I highly recommend this Doctor and the entire staff.*
