Electromyography (EMG) and
EMG & NCV Testing in Westfield, NJ
Dr. Todd Carnucci: Westfield Health & Rehabilitation
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) are electrodiagnostic tests performed to measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. These are important tests conducted by Dr. Todd Carnucci that can shed light on conditions of patients who report unexplained symptoms such a as numbness and/or tingling sensations, muscle cramping or weakness in an extremity (eg, one or both arms, legs).
We perform diagnostic testing (EMG & NCV) to determine the following:
- Is the problem muscle- or nerve-related?
- Is there nerve damage?
- What is causing nerve damage?
- Are the damaged nerves responding to treatment? (If the patient is receiving treatment)
What to expect during EMG
During a patient’s EMG test, a thin needle electrode is inserted through the skin and into a specific muscle. As the patients relaxes and contracts the muscle, the electrical impulses are recorded for Dr. Carnucci. The EMG test is performed sitting or lying down in a comfortable position and usually takes 30 minutes to an hour.
What to expect during NCV
During the NCV test, patch-like electrodes are applied to the skin in several places over the nerve that is to be tested. Low-level electrical current is dispensed through the electrodes to stimulate the nerve. The velocity of the electrical signal flowing through the nerves is measured for Dr. Carnuccil. Most people experience slight, temporary pain or discomfort. The NCV test is performed lying down or sitting, depending on the area being tested, and may take 15-30 minutes.
